Clovis North High School around the area of Fresno, California, is banning students from supporting President Donald Trump.
KCBS-TV reports how senior Maddie Mueller spoke out on the violation of her 1st Amendment rights after she was banned form wearing a red “Make America Great Again” hat.
“How does being a patriot in trying to show pride in your country, how is that inappropriate?” Mueller asked. “To my knowledge, Trump is not a logo, it’s a last name. It’s just our president. You can’t really claim that our president is a logo, a sports team, it’s not affiliating with any gang.”
Kelly Avants, a spokesperson for the school, contrarily stated that the claims against the school are inaccurate.
“It’s unfortunate that our dress code is being misrepresented as specifically singling out a MAGA hat, as that is not what the policy says,” Avants said. “The district dress code allows for students to wear shirts or other clothing with a wide variety of sayings and/or political commentary. Unless causing an actual disruption on campus, MAGA apparel is acceptable, and this has been shared with the student.”
According to that statement Mueller should have been able to continue wearing the cap. School district statements weakly assert that her particular hat was the source of a school disruption, thus it was prohibited.
The teen had strong words for the school that are surprisingly practical, “I don’t care if I offend anybody,” Mueller said. “I’m just showing support for the president and what I believe.”
