Pushing Tariffs Require Gentle Hand

Sen. Angus King (I-ME) suggested that Trump’s idea to impose tariffs on materials such as steel and aluminum “could have long-term ramifications.”

King stated, “We don’t live in a static universe. You can’t make a change of this significance and assume that nothing else is going to happen as a result and that is what worries me.”

“You want to do these kinds of things with a scalpel, not a chainsaw.”

“I think there’s a concern because, as you mentioned earlier, at least as far as anyone can tell, there wasn’t a great deal of consultation outside of the Commerce Department and even there was significant dissent and surprise, as I understand it, within the White House when the announcement was made on Thursday. So there is a concern. I mean this is a very, very important decision and it’s one that could have long-term ramifications and it was announced in this kind of shorthand way.”

Why is it that the Globalist think it is a great thing for the other countries to put Tariffs on our goods…but we are not to consider fair trade with those very countries…??? We are to remain bent over the barrel and lose all manufacturing capability and jobs for our people while the other counties in the world stack us up with trade deficits as far as the eye can see…and that is a good thing for who in this country…???
And how is it good for national security for this country to have zero manufacturing capability….??? Answer those questions first and then maybe we will put your girl Hillary into office in 2020…right?
Until you can answer those questions just bugger of!

You are talking as a typical FAUX follower, ignoring reality and have NO knowledge of how international market works. Allow me, ALL IMPORTS HAVE TARIFS: Vehicles, televisions, computers, FOOD, etc, ALL with NO exception pays TARIF to come into the US soil/territory, its call IMPORT TAX, Excise TAX, some times this TARIF/TAX is as high as 100% of the original cost of the Imported item. YOUR IDIOT trump is talking ADDING more TAX to products you are consuming already while bitching how expensive life have become. Wake UP and smell the coffee. This is NOT about HILLARY Clinton who won the popular vote by 5M vote over THE CLOWN in the white house today and all his CORUUPTED FAMILY!

      • Ron C

Talk to anyone one in the import/export business and you find you are spewing hogwash…the tariff are lopsided against this country…And yet you have been indoctrinated to believed their is no trade imbalance?
Could be you need to wake up and take a strong look at reality.

  • Ah nutz

I’ll trust President Trump to know what’s up… If all the opposition were as wealthy as Trump by their business dealings – they might give reason to listen ,,, nah , just a bunch of jealous ‘pucker butts’…

    • Ron C

Bunch of globalist with their special deals.

    • Don Ament

‘Trust President Trump to know what’s up’. Maximum gullibility there.

      • wayne g dearry

You are looking at the wrong world picture Don. Wait and see.

its better than trusting Hillary, or berney, you d**K HEAD!

  • flashy0ne

I would CERTAINLY hope that the status quo WOULD change. As the President has pointed out again, and again, and again, good old Uncle Sugar has been subsidizing the world for many years. FOR ONCE, we have a President who has said “enough is enough”, these HUGE trade unbalances have GOT TO STOP! The FACT that you have had unfettered access to our markets FOR YEARS does NOT mean that this can continue OR THAT IT IS NORMAL. Parity may be hard to face, but NOW IT’S A REALITY. It’s about time !!!

    • Don Ament

Your Fuhrer has spoken, so it must be true. Troglodyte.

      • Robert Andrews

YOUR IGNORANCE TO THE OBVIOUS SHOULD ALSO SPEAK VOLUMES ON YOUR APPARENT DISCONNECT WITH REALITY DON!

      • flashy0ne

When reason fails, resort to name calling — a typical ruse of the ‘left’

Don Ament: ignorance breeds ignorance, and yours is showing through!

“…bent over the barrel…”? “Lose all manufacturing capability..”? That has never happened and will never happen–that is all a ‘boogieman under the bed’ scare tactic promulgated by the current administration (who, by the way, are trying to sell this whole concept to a gullible American public), easily disproved by the fact that we just fine being the world’s largest producer of airplanes, heavy equipment, farm equipment, military gear (including military ships of all sizes, fighters and cargo planes as well as tanks and artillery all made with American steel and aluminum) and an enormous variety of other products. Yeah, sure, you buy a metal spatula from the dollar store and it will be made in China but I hope you’re not alluding to these trinkets as the heart of American manufacturing. What the author is trying to articulate is that trade wars are very destructive for everyone involved (look at Clinton’s trade skirmish over aluminum, Bush II’s trade skirmish over steel and Obama’s tariffs on Chinese steel as proof). It is estimated that those three decisions cost us as much as $100 billion in lost exports and 200,000 jobs. Trump’s pushing this whole thing so he can say that he kept his campaign promises and his ego is too big for him to ever admit he was wrong. Always remember, in global trade, what goes around comes around and can bite you in the butt.

At what cost? Yes we make all of these things with steel, Aluminum, and Plastics. Too bad we have to buy the raw materials just listed from China and others who bought scrap from us with huge tariffs and then sell back to us at huge profits with no
tariffs but with shipping costs. Now where does that leave us? We don’t have the jobs created by the steel mills and Aluminum Smelters or the jobs created by the plastics resin and chemical producers, along with the jobs and industries created to build and maintain those facilities. Plus if we had these industries here we could save on the international shipping costs. Also we wouldn’t be in a position to be held hostage for higher prices by offshore interests every time we turn around. The economy would be better off if we were self sufficient.

    • TheEngineer73

Who in the United States makes Steel, or Aluminum and where? How much do they make? How much do we import because it is unavailable here?

  • John Riverside

People: Wake Up to The Chinese/ Japanese / World Wide Tariffs all USA purchases have been increasingly subjected to since Lyndon Johnson, causing The USA to have Huge trade deficits even though we buy more goods than any country on Earth. This is the origin of our Rust Belt. We MUST produce more steel and steel like items than any country on the planet — like we did before. It is that simple. All this “outrage” about foreign steel being tariffed comes from Wall Street and the “play for pay” crowd, who only look at short term events and never think ahead or think big. Think Big, People. Think Big. The Wall Street Market will “awaken” to this “new opportunity” if you tell them That Is What You Want. Wall Street ALWAYS follows the flow — it never thinks or follows intelligence. Donald Trump is RIGHT ON in this decision and I Strongly Support Him.

Well said and we hope Pre. Trump does NOT back down. I wanted to kick LBJ in the rear–What a lousy Pres. he was. When he said he wasn’t going to run for another term my wife and I said “thank you Jesus”.

BACK IN 1991, WHEN ANOTHER TWEEDLE DEE RAN FOR PRESIDENT AGAINST ANOTHER TWEEDLE DUMB. THERE WAS AN INDEPENDENT NAMED ROSS PEROT, WHO STOOD IN BETWIXT THE TWO FREE TRADE, TRAITORS TO THEIR COUNTRY, AND TOLD ALL THAT, (AND I WILL TRY TO REMEMBER HIS QUOTE), “THERE WOULD BE A GIANT SUCKING SOUND OF JOBS GOING TO MEXICO IF NAFTA WAS SIGNED!” AND THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT HAS HAPPENED WITH ALL THESE FLAWED “TRADE” DEAL-DEALS, THAT HAS ONLY HELPED THE FAT CATS ON WALL STREET GET MORE FAT! WHILE THE REST OF US OUT HERE FIGHT FOR THE SCRAPS THEY ALLOW TO FALL OFF THE TABLE!
AS FOR KING’S COMMENT ON THE “CHAIN SAW” CRAPOLA, THESE DISASTROUS TRADE DEALS WERE RAMMED DOWN THE THROATS OF AN UN-WILLING MAJORITY OF THE WORKING CLASS PEOPLE IN THIS COUNTRY! NO MATTER THE POLITICAL AFFILIATION! THE POLS WHO WERE PUSHING THIS HEIST OF OUR FUTURE, DROPPED THIS ON US LIKE A MEGATON NUKE! “CHAINSAW?” COME ON MAN! SO SORRY ABOUT ALL YOU FAT CATS WHO HAVE RIPPED US ALL OFF, ARE NOW FACING A HIT TO YOUR STOCK PORTFOLIO! LET ME GET OUT A BIG CHINESE VIOLIN TO PLAY FOR YOU ALL!
WE DIDN’T WANT THE BAD DEALS THEN, AND WE DAMNED SURE DON’T WANT THEM NOW, AFTER SUFFERING THE LOSSES OF MILLIONS OF GOOD PAYING JOBS, WITH BENE’S, IN EXCHANGE FOR LOW WAGE
McJOBS WITH LITTLE TO NO BENE’S! STOP THE SCARE TACTICS! IT’S NOT GOING TO WORK!
