In a surprise move after Christmas, President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania visited U.S. troops stationed in Iraq.
The unscheduled visit marks the first time President Trump has entered a combat zone.
There is speculation over the reason for Trump’s arrival. It could be meant to bolster U.S. forces after he announced the withdrawal of ground troops in Syria. Similarly and more likely it could do with the president’s plan to reduce the number of U.S. troops in Afghanistan by roughly half. Or he could just be spreading some holiday cheer.
The move comes right as multiple outlets were accusing Trump of breaking 16 years worth of tradition. They noted that previous U.S. presidents have visited embattled troops before the holidays. It is hard to say wether or not scheduling prevented Trump from making the trip earlier.
